Meryn Steeves, Partner

Originally from New Brunswick, Meryn studied Communications at St. Thomas University, including spending a semester studying abroad in Sweden. She then received a Schulich Scholarship to study Law at Dalhousie University. Meryn was the youngest member of her graduating class in 2016 and won the Estate of E. Bligh Prize for the student with the highest marks in civil law subjects. After articling at Cox & Palmer, a large, full-service firm in Halifax, she moved to Peterborough to join John McGarrity at Steeves & McGarrity Law.

Meryn’s passion for Family Law started with her favourite law school professor, Rollie Thompson. She now focuses her practice on Family Law with a Collaborative background and training. Meryn believes that with the right skills, tools and team, we can reach an effective resolution to most disputes by way of an agreement – meaning clients retain control of the outcome rather than handing it off to a third-party decision-maker. Meryn is also trained in the Compassionate Integration Process.

Meryn loves animals (and is the proud owner of three dogs and a horse), the outdoors, strength training, cycling, and reading fiction. She volunteers as the Vice Chair of the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation, is a Member-at-Large of the Peterborough Law Association, and is a Member of the Animal Care Review Board. She is a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and Durham Region Collaborative Practice.

Meryn’s loves the proximity of Peterborough to the natural world; if you drive fifteen minutes in any direction you end up either in the middle of gorgeous rolling farmland or picturesque cottage country. On a professional level, Meryn discovered there was a need for quality family law services in Peterborough and the surrounding communities and strives to meet that need.

Meryn loves her practice, and the satisfaction that comes from using her knowledge and skills to help clients successfully navigate what is often an opaque system.
